Iceland is a place of eerie beauty. Although the winters are harsh, the Northern lights and the barren, surreal landscape are stunning at this time of the year. Here are some of the best things to do on a vacation to the capital city, Reykjavik.

Stay at the Frost and Fire Hotel

A short ride away from Reykjavik, this hotel is all about the hot springs. Iceland is known for its hot springs and several hotels provide excellent access to them. Frost and Fire Hotel is located close to a river that stays naturally warm for much of the year. As a result, most guests like to take a dip in the river during their stay here. Additionally, there is also an indoor spa and even a section for mud baths! The best part, however, is the in-house restaurant, Varma, where they whip up delicacies like reindeer, goose and wild boar.

This Lutheran parish church is the tallest church in Reykjavik, and is a sight to behold at 73 metres. Made with white concrete, it dominates the skyline and has an otherworldly feel to it. This church also happens to be the best place to take in the stunning views of the capital city. Be sure to pay special attention to the 5275-pipe organ, which was installed on 1992 – it is larger than life and beautiful.

Sample Some Excellent Icelandic Food

Icelandic food is in the limelight right now, and there is no better place to get a taste of it than in Reykjavik. Try some whale meat and sheep head. One of the traditional dishes that are a must-try is Matur og Drykkur, which is cod’s head cooked in chicken stock. Fermented shark is also considered to be a delicacy in Iceland.

Visit the Blue Lagoon

Situated a little outside the city, this is probably Iceland’s greatest tourist attraction. This geothermal mineral spa has water that is icy blue, with steam rising from it. After depositing your valuables in a locker, you can exfoliate yourself with the silica mud and then step into the lagoon and soak. This hot spring is about 37 degrees Celsius, and perfect for some natural body conditioning.

Chase the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights of Aurora Borealis is the other popular tourist attraction in Iceland. It consists of swirls of emerald green, blue and sometimes red light that can be seen against the night sky. These lights are best seen in the winter, and even though you can see them in the city, the best views are outside the city limits.
